Week 1 Fruit Wholesale Market Report

Cherry market sluggish after the holiday season, Vietnamese Kanyao enters peak season

In the past two weeks, seaborne Chilean cherries have arrived intensively. It is understood that due to the New Year's Day holiday last week and the satisfactory quality of some arrivals, the price of cherries gradually increased in the days before the end of the year. The sales performed well, and the market was at its best by December 31. After New Year's Day, because the festival effect has passed and the overall quality is not as good as expected, the market declines every day. By mid-week, the price had dropped by ¥100-¥150/piece compared to December 31. Santina 2JD 2-in-1 sells for about ¥350-¥370/piece, a decrease higher than the same period last year. At present, most of the arriving packages are two-in-one and small packages.

The majority of sea-shipped cherries are Santina, with Regina and Cordia being the main varieties. A new ship arrived at the port on January 4. Merchants are looking forward to the quality and price of the arrivals and are in a wait-and-see state. In addition, some merchants said that when the morning market started on the 5th, the atmosphere was good, and channel dealers and secondary wholesale markets were purchasing the new arrivals.

Some merchants selling cherries from different origins said that the quality of Argentine cherries this year is ideal, and the output is larger than before. Although the taste is not as good as Chilean cherries, they have high hardness and suffer fewer losses, so the price and sales are relatively ideal.

The arrival of Peruvian grapes has increased, and prices have gradually dropped. At present, red, green, and black grapes are all on the market, and merchants say that green grapes are relatively more popular. There are currently more green Sweet Globe varieties arriving than Autumn Crisp. It is understood that the price and sales of grapes were good before New Year's Day last week. The price of green grapes has increased from less than ¥300/piece in the middle of last month to ¥360-¥370/piece; after the holiday, it has fallen back to ¥280-¥310/piece, and sales are slow. However, there are still some big brands of green grapes with the same specifications priced at ¥390/piece, and sales are still very good. Black Muscat grapes are currently less available, the price is higher, and the fragrance and taste are improved.

Vietnam's Kanyao durian has entered the peak season, and merchants said the quality is relatively stable. Due to the increase in arrivals, the price of A-class fruits has dropped from ¥430-¥450/piece at the beginning of the mid-season last month to the current ¥330/piece. Merchants said that last week, due to the New Year's Eve and the arrival of Thai durians at that time, there was a lot of sales overall. The price of Kanyao rose to ¥360-¥370/piece but has fallen back this week. Merchants said that another factor in the slow sales this week is the lack of Thai durian supplies. Since the market is more inclined to Thai products, the availability of Thai durians will attract more buyers, and Vietnamese durian sales will also increase.

Yunnan blueberries produced in China are currently on sale, including Jewel and Spanish varieties. As the production season develops, prices gradually decrease. Currently, the Jewel blueberries with 15+ specifications sell for about ¥90-¥100/piece. Spanish varieties are priced at a high price of about ¥140/piece due to their pure sweet taste and small quantity. Jewel blueberry has good sales due to their price advantages.

As for imported stone fruits, Australian plums have been put on the market. According to merchants, they are about two weeks earlier than in previous years. The northern Australian plums were on the market earlier and have a sour taste. Now the southern plums, which have a sweeter taste, are on sale. Merchants selling imported nectarines said that the price of Australian yellow-fleshed nectarines has fallen recently, about 15% lower than the same period in previous years, while the price of Chilean white-fleshed nectarines is relatively good.
