German discount chain Netto has opened Europe’s largest autonomous supermarket in Regensburg. Customers can shop there without cash, a smartphone, registration or check-in - thanks to the deployment of artificial intelligence. Fruit and vegetables are automatically weighed and put on the ticket as soon as they are taken off the shelf. Once finished with their shopping, customers can make their way to the so-called “Fast Exit Terminal”. There is no need to scan items: rather, the detailed cash ticket appears immediately on the screen. According to Netto, this is unique in the world.

Australia: Supermarket anger sees more shoppers finding alternative ways to buy food
Burned by reports of rising prices at the major supermarkets, more consumers are turning to less mainstream ways to buy food and supplies, market sources report. Orchardist Helen Ricketts, who grows stone fruit in the Riverina town of Young, said she no longer sells much of her produce to the big players, Coles and Woolworths. Ms Ricketts, now one of the Canberra market's regular store holders, said her orchard had been burned by the big supermarkets in the past.

Costs from grocery suppliers to supermarkets increase 4.5%pa in December - Infometrics NZ
Supplier cost increases remained higher than a year ago in December, but there was continued moderation in the annual pace of change. The Infometrics-Foodstuffs New Zealand Grocery Supplier Cost Index (GSCI) shows an average 4.5% increase in what suppliers charged Foodstuffs supermarkets for goods in December 2023 compared to a year ago.

UK: New Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons veg rules due to bad weather
Supermarkets have agreed to accept smaller veg from rain-soaked UK farms. John Moulding, the commercial director of TH Clements, said: “This is the worst flooding we have had this century and we have lost about 20% of our total winter crops including sprouts, cabbages, cauliflower and leaks. It’s been a very tough time for us for more than three months both physically and financially in having to pull the vegetables out of the muddy fields".
