Last summer, Dutch onion packer Jonika from Oostdijk announced their investment in five Flikweert Vision QualityGraders. These machines were installed in early December. "We'd planned for that to take two weeks, but it was done well within the timeframe," says Jaap Nieuwenhuijse, Jonika's director.
According to him, the machines' compactness is a significant advantage. "We could integrate them into the existing line and routing. That was a must for us and was successfully achieved to our full satisfaction."
The sorting process has been further optimized with a new shaking sorter from Petech, and TSG from Kapelle has taken over the line's control. "The machines have worked properly from day one. We've been using them for three weeks now and are delighted with it," Jaap admits.
"The five machines give us sufficient capacity and options to process onions as desired. A significant advantage is that these QualityGraders have made substantial advances at onion packing plants. That means lots of data has been collected. Thanks to the artificial intelligence that assesses the onions, the quality selection is becoming increasingly precise."
"These Quality Graders replace the entire grading section, thus saving lots of manual labor. We, however, give them a final once-over before they're packed," Jaap explains.
"That's to ensure the onions arrive at our customers in good condition. We can generally work more efficiently and sustainably."
"The residual streams are also sorted into different categories so they, too, can find a suitable destination," Jaap concludes.
Flikweert Vision will be exhibiting at Fruit Logistica, Hall 4.1 – B-32
