MAFSE and BMDC conduct field visits

Belize's shift from imported to domestically produced onions promoted

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) teamed up with the Projects Unit of the Belize Marketing & Development Corporation (BMDC) to carry out field visits to onion farms in the Corozal District. This initiative is part of a strategy to transition from importing onions to marketing locally produced onions as the local season commences.

MAFSE and BMDC are collaborating to support Belizean farmers. "We wish our farmers a very productive 2024 onion season and look forward to quality onion supplies for our Belizean consumers," said MAFSE.

On January 17, MAFSE held its second onion meeting for the 2023/2024 production year with onion farmers from Corozal, Orange Walk, and Belize Districts. The meeting, which saw the participation of 35 individuals including representatives from BANA, Customs, BMDC, and Extension Officers, emphasized the need for high-quality onions that meet market needs.

"The primary objective of the meeting was to share forecasts and estimates of onion production for the upcoming season," MAFSE stated. "This collaborative effort aimed to provide valuable insights into the expected yield, fostering a better understanding of market dynamics and demand projections."
