Malaysia's north-east monsoon floods have affected 2,095 agro-food farmers across the country, impacting approximately 4,701 hectares of land. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup reported that 72 fruit and vegetable farmers in Pahang were among those affected, with an estimated 58.8 hectares in districts such as Pekan, Kuantan and Rompin hit.
"Data collection and updates are ongoing due to the unpredictable weather. Flood-affected farmers should register with their local Agriculture Department for aid approval. We aim to expedite assistance for a swift return to farm operations before the next flood season," Kurup said during a meeting in Sungai Atong on January 20.
At the event, 22 agro-food farmers growing crops like sugarcane received agricultural aid, including fertilisers, pesticides, and agro-food kits, to ease their return to farming. Kurup also mentioned that the Agriculture Department plans to conduct a study to help farmers in flood-prone areas mitigate losses during the monsoon season.
