Washington's apple industry witnesses a resurgence in exports to India, following the termination of tariffs in September. Todd Fryhover, President of the Washington Apple Commission, states this has led to a substantial surge in shipments compared to the previous season.
"We were at the same duty as all other origins, which spurred additional interest in exports. Coupled with larger crops, we've experienced a dramatic increase in shipments this season versus last in India," Fryhover explains.
Despite the historical preference for Washington state apples in India, Fryhover admits that restoring the market to its pre-tariff status will require time and dedicated efforts.
"India is familiar with the red delicious variety as they grow it locally. Before the Section 232 tariffs, we shipped 8 million bushels annually. We had a strong reputation in Washington. When the duty was lifted, importers quickly returned to Washington," Fryhover elaborates.
While exports to India are increasing, the journey to rebuild brand recognition and market share may be a slow process.
