Chile and Mexico go ahead with the renewal of their Free Trade Agreement

During the 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), representatives from Chile and Mexico signed the terms of reference for the renewal of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA), in force since 1999. Claudia Sanhueza, from the Undersecretariat for International Relations (SUBREI) of Chile, and Alejandro Encinas, Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of Mexico, made this significant step towards the update of the agreement.

The renewed FTA will include new chapters focused on trade and gender, as well as on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), thereby striving for a more inclusive and equitable agreement. These changes are especially intended to benefit MSMEs and promote the empowerment of women-led businesses, launching a new stage in the bilateral relationship characterized by growth, support, respect, cooperation and friendship.

Also, to commemorate the 25 years since the FTA first came into effect, a joint project is being implemented to identify gaps in the application of the agreement, with special attention paid to women and MSMEs. "We want this anniversary to be not only an occasion to look back, but also an opportunity to look ahead and ensure that our agreement fulfills the current needs of both countries," says Sanhueza.
