Market settles on carrots, though adjusts on jumbo sizing

The market on carrots has loosened up a bit as anticipated. That's largely because both the carrot yields and quality have been good. "The carrot yields are much better than this time last year, which is mostly due to better weather," says Rob Giragosian with Kern Ridge Growers, LLC.

Carrot supply had been tight throughout the winter due to low production in all regions. Low crop yields combined with lost acreage from weather events left less supply.

Right now, Kern Ridge is cycling to the Imperial Valley for production. "The conditions have been good this year and we should get good yields throughout the season there," he says. "Our harvest is close to on time. It is farming so there are always challenges you didn't anticipate, but we are pleased with our timing this season."

Movement steady on carrots
As for carrot demand, it is consistent right now. "There is good movement at decent pricing," says Giragosian. "The movement should be good through early May."

As for pricing on carrots, it has been steady on both medium and babies. "We have seen some market adjustment on jumbos," says Giragosian, who adds that the market seems to have settled overall and that he does not expect any big fluctuations on pricing ahead in the coming weeks.
