NAADs wants Ugandan farmers to consider Hass avocado cultivation

The National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) in Uganda has identified the Hass avocado industry as a burgeoning sector with significant potential for growth. The global market for avocados is currently valued at over $8 billion, with projections indicating a rise to more than $20 billion by 2026. This growth is attributed to an increasing demand that has surpassed supply, prompting NAADS to encourage local farmers to cultivate Hass avocados.

NAADS communications officer Khadija Nakakande highlighted the reluctance of Ugandan farmers to engage in Hass avocado farming due to past experiences with other crops. However, with a strong market in the European Union (EU) and the Middle East, there is a clear incentive for those with idle land to venture into this crop. The demand in the EU is particularly high, despite strict quality specifications.

Uganda has also seen a rise in the number of off-takers establishing local Hass avocado processing plants. These factories are involved in producing various products from Hass avocados, including vegetable oils and soft drinks.
