In Bihar, traditionally known for its diverse agricultural practices, strawberry cultivation is witnessing a significant expansion. This development is attributed to the introduction of high-value varieties by Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) in Bhagalpur. Initiated in 2010, the strawberry project at BAU aimed at promoting scientific farming techniques and agri-entrepreneurship among local farmers for their socio-economic upliftment. BAU vice-chancellor D R Singh highlighted the growing popularity of strawberries in the region.
According to Ruby Rani, a scientist in the department of horticulture and the project's principal investigator, the research evaluated 19 strawberry varieties, identifying 'Festival', 'Sweet Charlie', 'Winter Dawn', 'Cama Rosa', 'Nabila', and 'Chandler' as suitable for Bihar's conditions.
The project has successfully engaged over 80 farmers in strawberry cultivation, enhancing their income potential. The cultivation process, starting from October to mid-November, involves the use of dissolved fertilizers supplied through irrigation, with fruiting occurring from December to January and harvesting extending till mid-April. The crop's high value and short-duration harvest cycle are attracting new farmers to strawberry cultivation in the state.
