Chinese authorities crack down on counterfeit kiwis

In China, authorities have taken action against entities misusing the Zespri brand for local fruit sales. Collaborating with Shanghai police, Zespri has targeted a small group involved in counterfeit operations, leading to several raids.

These operations were found to also impact Dole and GoodFarmer, prompting joint enforcement efforts. The Public Prosecutor's Office is moving forward with prosecutions, which have already deterred counterfeit sales online. This reflects Zespri's strategy to protect its brand and ensure food safety, supported by local enforcement of IP rights.

The company anticipates future challenges with counterfeit G3 cultivars, but remains committed to defending New Zealand growers and Zespri customers. Legal actions are also underway to address unauthorized Gold3 plantings, including a petition in a Chinese court to uphold a New Zealand Court of Appeal judgment.
