Recently unveiled product was showcased at this year's Cibus exhibition

Pomegranate arils with a shelf life of up to 20 days

Peeled pomegranates packed in trays will be the main processed product for Italian company Masseria Fruttirossi, a first-time exhibitor at the Cibus International Food Exhibition (7-10 May 2024).

Italy's largest pomegranate producer has invested in the fresh-cut segment, launching ready-to-eat arils in various sizes for both the retail channel and the hospitality sector.

"The innovative high-pressure treatment and vacuum packaging process," explains Dario De Lisi, "allow us to extend and improve the average shelf life, which has gone from the traditional 7 to 20 days. A technology capable of eliminating the bacterial load by means of low temperatures, while preserving the organoleptic and nutraceutical characteristics of the product. We presented this innovation at the fair in Parma (Italy), where it was very well received, also because of the long commercial calendar guaranteed to operators (from September to April/May). On the other hand, it's a sought-after product for most of the year, but availability remains limited due to the difficulty of transforming the product. Supplies will start at the beginning of September. This is when the next campaign for early varieties will begin."

Masseria Fruttirossi offers the arils in two different package sizes, 100- and 150-gram units, which are distributed to supermarkets. For restaurants and other businesses involved in food service and hospitality, the packages weigh approximately 2 kg. "The convenient, peelable plastic film tray, which includes a teaspoon, renders the product versatile and suitable not only for home consumption. Prior to this initiative, we had previously explored the potential of selling this product. However, now that our production capabilities have been enhanced to the extent that we are able to offer substantial quantities, we are confident that we can successfully establish a market with customers both in Italy and in Europe. The company's short production cycle enables it to compete in the marketplace. We are responsible for all aspects of production, including packaging and marketing."
