Growing flat peaches is becoming more popular among Turkish fresh produce growers, says Beyazit Afiyon, owner of Turkish fresh produce exporter PIK Global: "The flat peach, which we call donut peach, is a fruit of which the production is increasing in Turkey. We included it in our production program four years ago and we have been able to grow it efficiently for two years. We have focused on more productive varieties both in terms of quality as well as brix. All the donut peaches we produce have white flesh. The colors, formations and plant health of our products are at the highest level."
Although the team of PIK Global is young, the quality of the produce is improving every season, Afiyon explains. "Compared to the previous season, our production and the quality of the flat peaches we procure are much better. We're trying to improve ourselves in this regard every day. We improve ourselves by studying better varieties. In Turkey, yields are generally at normal levels this year. Since the packaging process is slow, we need to ensure the start of the packaging and shipments while the harvest is still going on. We continue this by working more hours with more staff."
According to Afyon, the Turkish flat peaches are gaining popularity in the Asian and Middle Eastern markets: "Our flat peaches attract attention, especially in the Asian market. We send our products to Far Eastern markets, such as Malaysia, Singapore, India and Hong Kong. In the Middle East market, we also market products to Gulf countries like Dubai, Kuwait and Qatar. We offer our peaches in an easy to carry packaging, showcasing their beautiful appearance."
"We're a new, young and hardworking team. We're also learning new things in terms of production as we go. We can find a place in the personal market with what we've learned. We have many competitors and many rival companies working to do better. Because of this, we should never compromise on our quality. We want to gain customers and supply products to them in the markets we work in. Stability is very important to us. Therefore, our biggest expectation from this season is to finish the season satisfactorily," Afiyon concludes.
