Guatemala's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA) reported that the country is in a crucial phase to be able to export Hass avocados to the United States, pending the result of the Pest Risk Analysis. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (APHIS) is receiving feedback now. This could significantly open the doors to international markets for Guatemalan producers.
Through the Directorate of Plant Health of the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR), the MAGA plays a fundamental role in this process. It is responsible for registering and inspecting crops and granting phytosanitary certifications to those producers who meet the required standards. This certification is essential to ensure that the Guatemalan Hass avocado meets international requirements to be exported.
The possibility of exporting Hass avocado to the United States is significant for Guatemala's agricultural sector. It brings new economic opportunities, strengthens the local industry, and benefits producers giving them wider access to international markets.
Future projections are positive. According to the Diario de Centro America, Guatemalan producers expect to export at least 15,552.80 tons of Hass avocado to the United States by 2030, thanks to the growing demand for this fruit in the North American country. This projection, supported by the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport), underlines the MAGA's commitment and continuous effort to meet all the requirements to export Hass avocados, reaffirming its commitment to Guatemala's agricultural development.
