Argentina surpassed Peru's and Mexico's garlic production and export

Argentina is one of Latin America's most important garlic producers, surpassing Peru and Mexico, thanks to its favorable climate and extensive plantations. Garlic is essential in the local cuisine and an important export product. Argentina exports its garlic to important markets such as the United States, Spain, and Canada, where it is highly valued for its quality and flavor.

Despite its prominent position in the region, Argentina must increase its production and efficiency to close the gap with the world's leading garlic producers and exporters. Adopting innovative technologies and training producers are key strategies to achieve this goal. Promoting local consumption of garlic by highlighting its health benefits and culinary contribution, is also crucial.

China is the world's leading producer and exporter of garlic, contributing approximately 80% of global consumption. Spain is also an important exporter, especially of white garlic. In addition to Argentina, other important Latin American garlic producers are Chile, Mexico, and Peru, each with specific areas that offer ideal conditions to grow high-quality garlic.

In 2020, Argentina produced about 450,000 tons of garlic. The province of Mendoza led production, followed by San Juan, Córdoba, and Buenos Aires. This activity generates employment in the agricultural sector and contributes significantly to the national economy, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
