Despite its prominent position in the region, Argentina must increase its production and efficiency to close the gap with the world's leading garlic producers and exporters. Promoting local consumption of garlic by highlighting its health benefits and culinary contribution, is also crucial.
China is the world's leading producer and exporter of garlic, contributing approximately 80% of global consumption. Spain is also an important exporter, especially of white garlic. In addition to Argentina, other important Latin American garlic producers are Chile, Mexico, and Peru, each with specific areas that offer ideal conditions to grow high-quality garlic.
In 2020, Argentina produced about 450,000 tons of garlic. The province of Mendoza led production, followed by San Juan, Córdoba, and Buenos Aires. This activity generates employment in the agricultural sector and contributes significantly to the national economy, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
