In Malaysia's Terengganu, the cultivation of Cucumis Melo, a hybrid melon developed from seven varieties sourced from China and Japan, is gaining traction among a new generation of farmers. This initiative, which began nearly a decade ago, aims to position Terengganu at the forefront of the premium fruit industry. The hybrid melon, known for its sweet taste and unique texture, has garnered attention both locally and internationally, particularly at entrepreneurial expos like the one held at Sasana Kijang.
However, the cultivation of these melons is strictly regulated by the state government, with planting permitted only within Terengganu. Currently, the region is home to over 30 melon farmers, including Ms Raja Nordianah of Murai Estates, who sees significant untapped market potential for these fruits. Despite their premium quality, Terengganu melons are priced competitively at around US$5 per kilo and are noted for their long shelf life, which extends up to four to five weeks.
