The Egyptian white bean season gets underway in just a few days. Abdelkader Alhabouny reports a fine season ahead, with an increase in volumes.
Alhabouny: "The first harvest starts in a few days. We experienced concerns last season over excessive temperatures, and farmers have adapted by increasing the area of white beans in the old clay soils around the Nile, rather than the recently reclaimed desert land."
The grower continues, "The clay soils are suitable for white beans, and are located in areas that are not much affected by extreme temperatures. This means a higher yield than last season and better quality." In the opposite direction, other growers have moved onion production from clay soils to sandy desert soils, reports one onion grower.
To meet the needs of the local Egyptian market, a major consumer of white beans, the surface area has been greatly increased, reports Alhabouny. According to his estimates, the area has increased by at least 25%. He adds, "White bean prices are attractive to producers. Demand is constantly increasing, both on the local market and for export."
The grower is anticipating a harvest of "good quality", he adds. "The sizes are good, we have 180 pieces per 100 grams, 200 pieces, 210 up to 225 per 100 grams. The beans are not at all wet and have good coloring. Egyptian white beans are well known on the market, and I am pleased to announce excellent quality this year."
