Egyptian garlic prices have risen several times this season, due to limited volumes and high demand, according to Mohamed Shaaban, General Manager of Garlico.
"Prices rose right at the start of the season, due to the halving of volumes in Egypt, and then increased repeatedly. Growers are now preparing to stockpile garlic seeds for planting in August. We are therefore expecting a further increase at the end of June. There will be less quantity available while the demand for garlic is still high," says Shaaban.
According to Shaaban, exporters will face the challenge of maintaining consistent quality throughout the rest of the season. He adds: "Sourcing good quality will remain a challenge. But even for second-quality garlic, we have strong demand from Taiwan and Brazil"
Demand for Egyptian garlic has been exceptionally high this season. Shaaban says: "We exported more than in any previous season to Europe, especially Spain. Demand was also strong from the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Taiwan. All our markets maintained strong demand throughout the season, with the exception perhaps of Australia."
The grower concludes, "At Garlico we had anticipated the demand with a number of measures, such as increasing the acreage and buying a new sorting line. This season we only used varieties with big cloves, up to 7 cm, which we sell under our Zain brand. We've also offered our regular customers lower prices compared with the market price."
