Retailers want to include organics as part of their avocado programs

California organic avocados are in peak supply right now. "They are in peak supply in May through July, and in August we start to taper off weekly with fewer California pounds. Mexico will increase supply in August and September," says Calavo Growers Inc.'s Peter Shore.

For Calavo, its organic avocados will be a key discussion point at the upcoming Organic Produce Summit in Monterey, California July 10-11. Along with California at that time, it will be sourcing fruit from Mexico too, though this is a lighter supply period from Mexico.

Even demand for organic
As for demand, it's been steady for organic avocados. "Each year retailers want to have it as part of their avocado offerings and we do organic avocados in bulk displays but also bagged displays," says Shore. "Looking ahead, I think demand will stay steady."

All of this is leaving pricing throughout the summer months strong and active markets are expected.

While Calavo will be talking organic avocados at its booth, #521, it also has something else it's ready to discuss. "We're celebrating our 100th anniversary this year and we plan to have some things to give away to help celebrate that," says Shore. "At the show, it's also always good to see our customers discuss organic opportunities and promote our organic avocados. The show also has good content, the seminars are worthwhile and it's well attended by the industry."
