The fig season is approaching fast, and it's an important season for Aksun, says Akin Soyleyen, marketing manager for the Turkish exporter: "Bursa Black Figs, also known as Bursa Siyahı, are a renowned variety of figs originating from Bursa, Turkey. They are highly prized for their large size, dark purple skin, and sweet, juicy flesh. These figs are typically harvested in late summer and early autumn. Over the past few years, we've been experiencing steady growth in fig production. Our harvesting journey begins in the southern region of Turkey, progresses through Aydin in the Aegean Region, and culminates in the famous Bursa region."
In anticipation of the fig season, Aksun has made an investment into their packing line recently, Soyleyen explains. "This coming season, we are excited to announce the installation of a new packing line in Bursa. This enhancement is aimed at improving both the quality and volume of our fig production, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of excellence. The addition of the new packing line reflects our commitment to innovation and our dedication to providing top-quality figs to our customers."
An earlier harvest is expected this year due to the warmer weather, meaning it'll be mid-August when the harvest commences, Soyleyen predicts: "Interestingly, this year we are expecting an earlier-than-usual harvesting period for the figs due to the hotter climate conditions in the region. In the past year, we commenced harvesting in the Bursa region on the 26th of August. However, this year we anticipate starting the harvest at least one to two weeks earlier. This shift in the harvesting schedule is attributed to the warmer temperatures accelerating the ripening process of the figs."
The earlier start to the fig season is expected to be beneficial for both growers and exporters alike, Soyleyen states. "The demand for Bursa Black Figs remains consistently high, and by beginning the harvest earlier, we can better meet this demand and ensure a steady supply of fresh figs to our markets. The early harvest also allows us to maximize the growing season, providing ample time to ensure that every fig meets our stringent quality standards."
