NSO report reveals: Fruits & vegetables top list of all crops in value terms

In the latest statistical release by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the value output of 'fruits and vegetables' in India for the fiscal year 2022-23 has been highlighted as the leading category among all crop groups, capturing a 28% share in value terms. This figure surpasses that of cereals, which stands at 27%.

The report indicates a growth in the output value of 'fruits and vegetables' from Rs 2,870 billion in 2011-12 to Rs 4,340 billion in 2022-23, utilizing constant (2011-12) prices.

The crop group, which also includes pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, spices, and medicinal plants, collectively forms a 45% share in terms of value. Within the broader agriculture and allied sectors, the crop group remains dominant with a 54% share of the gross value of output (GVO), though there has been a gradual decrease from 62% in 2011-12. The report further details that Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal lead in the highest value of output for cereals and fruits and vegetables respectively.
