Nova Siri Genetics estimates 15% growth in Huelva

Nova Siri Genetics, a company based in Italy specialized in the research and testing of new strawberry and berry varieties, has taken part in the 9th International Berry Congress, a meeting organized by Freshuelva with the aim of analyzing the current situation in the sector and its future challenges.

As a partner company of Freshuelva, Nova Siri Genetics has once again participated with its own stand, where they have talked about the results achieved with its strawberry varieties in the south of Spain during the campaign which has just finished, in which 50 million plants have been sold, despite the fact that the acreage devoted to strawberries in the region has been reduced by 5% this season. During the event, the NSG work team has had a comprehensive schedule of meetings with strawberry producing companies, technical managers, nurseries and other agents involved in the activity to analyze the good results achieved by the company's early strawberry varieties and to look into the needs for the 2024-2025 campaign.

Based on the information provided by the companies at these meetings, as well as the requests of the Spanish nurseries producing Nova Siri Genetics' strawberry varieties, the firm foresees an additional 10-15% growth in the number of plants in the Huelva area for the next season. To be precise, NSG sees a growing interest in the varieties NSG 207 - Gioelita®, NSG 203 - Marimbella®, and in two new selections that look very promising for the area. "The interest on the part of nurseries is a testament to the value of our strawberry variety range. Our varieties are among the best options for growers interested in early strawberry varieties to meet the market demand from November and December to June," says Nicola Tufaro, the company's breeder.

NSG's licensed nurseries have been planting in the Castile-Leon area since March. So far, the development of the nurseries has been satisfactory, thanks also to the favorable weather conditions that have allowed the plants to grow and the stolons to emerge.

In fact, the weather in this area of northern Spain allows excellent quality plants to be obtained, both in pots and as fresh plants. The distribution of the potted plants in the region of Huelva and the Mediterranean basin will begin in September, while that of the fresh plants will start in early October.
