Kyrgyzstan considers banning vegetable and fruit imports from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan

During a Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development meeting, Balbak Tulobayev, a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan, proposed prohibiting the import of vegetables, fruits, and berries from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The aim is to support local farmers by preventing competition from these countries. "Why should we enrich others and buy their products if we have our own? We want to eat local vegetables, fruits and berries, and not just export them," he stated. Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Kubat Kuseyinov, responded that the ministry would review the proposal.

Furthermore, Deputy Zamirbek Mamasadikov highlighted complaints from farmers in the Osh region regarding the impact of imports on local tomato prices. He noted the competitive disadvantage local producers face due to the differing agricultural conditions in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which result in lower-priced imports.
