Bangladesh hopes to boost agricultural exports through improved air cargo access

The Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has highlighted the need for sufficient air cargo capacity to facilitate the growth of fruit, vegetable, and other agricultural exports, according to UNB. During the first meeting of the Standing Committee on Import and Export of Fruits and Vegetables at the FBCCI's Motijheel office, stakeholders from the agricultural trade sector emphasized the importance of maintaining airfreight costs at levels that allow them to remain competitive in international markets.

The discussion also touched upon the potential benefits of establishing a dedicated cargo system specifically for the transport of perishable agricultural goods. Mohammad Mansoor, Chairman of the committee and Managing Director of Mansoor General Trading Company, led the meeting. FBCCI Director Sirajul Islam and FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam, who joined the meeting virtually, discussed the challenges faced by the sector, including the rising costs of import and export due to the dollar crisis, increased airfare, and complexities related to customs and the Harmonized System (HS) code. Alam also mentioned that the FBCCI is in talks with the government to address these issues and streamline the import-export process.
