Hungary announces €125 mln tender for horticultural development

The Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture has released a HUF 50 billion tender (€125 mln), aimed at enhancing horticultural infrastructure. Announced by Minister István Nagy, the initiative titled "Support for post-harvest developments related to horticultural greenhouses and cold storages" seeks to facilitate the establishment and upgrading of horticultural greenhouses, cold and vegetable storage units, alongside the acquisition of processing equipment for fruits and vegetables.

This tender encourages collaborations among large and small-scale producers for substantial investments in infrastructure improvements. The focus areas include the construction and refurbishment of glass or foil greenhouses, cold stores, storage facilities for vegetables and fruits, post-harvest processing units, and the procurement of new machinery and tools. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes energy efficiency enhancements.

Minister Nagy referenced the previous cycle of support under the Rural Development Program for horticulture, which backed 7,300 projects with HUF 190 billion, resulting in the development of 800,000 square meters of greenhouses and 465,000 square meters of foil houses. This expansion equates to 1.26 million square meters of advanced cultivation space, complemented by the creation of approximately 452,000 cubic meters of cold storage capacity. The ongoing tender aims to continue these advancements, underscoring the significance of modern storage solutions in minimizing post-harvest losses and food waste, while also mitigating the impacts of climate change on crop production.
