The Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with Lulu Group International, has successfully exported 3.5 tons of organically grown pineapples to the Middle East. This venture, initiated under a Memorandum of Understanding signed during the 'World Food India' event in November 2023, represents the first international shipment for the current season. The agreement aims to enhance market access for Meghalaya's agricultural produce, thereby increasing income for local farmers.
The exported pineapples, sourced from Tikirikilla block in West Garo Hills, were cultivated under the supervision of the Muktidata Multipurpose Cooperative Society. This export is part of the larger 'Meghalaya Collectives' initiative, designed to collectively market the produce of small-scale farmers in the state. The initiative provides comprehensive support including packaging, branding, testing, and marketing assistance to agri-entrepreneurs and farmer cooperatives.
Additionally, a trial shipment of 250 kgs of pineapples was recently sent to Delhi in collaboration with Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., receiving a positive response. This has led to an order of over 300 tons for the current season, with plans to expand availability across more outlets. This collaboration not only aims to improve price realization for farmers, but also to explore further linkages for other agricultural products from Meghalaya.
The state's efforts to strengthen market linkages for its agricultural produce are expected to continue, with the goal of enhancing the quality and marketability of its agri-produce, thus doubling the income of its farmers.
