Lime pricing to strengthen this month

The supply of limes in the Northeast is steady. "Supply is in decent shape. Mexico has had a drought and there was also Tropical Storm Alberto which could have prolonged some things but even with that, we've been in good supply," says Joshua Schwartz of Four Seasons Produce, Inc.

While Colombia is also shipping limes right now, Four Seasons Produce sources its fruit from Mexico. "The quality from Mexico has been excellent. I've had no concerns with that or any of the sizes," he says.

However, in mid-June, the Persian Lime Growers and Packers Association (COPELP) released a statement about the extreme heat and drought conditions in all crops in Persian lime-growing regions in Mexico, noting that it would impact quality and sizing. That means Schwartz has his eye on the weeks ahead. "I do think July is going to get tricky," he says. "Things were still pretty promotable in June and the demand and movement was there."

Unknown in August
As for August, he says it's unknown as to what to expect. "In July, I expect markets to increase. The supply-demand ratio is going to flip," he says, adding that the quality, sizing, and shelf life are likely to be impacted because of Mexico's high temperatures and lack of rain. It's also expected that in July and August, larger sizes will be particularly tight in supply. "Just altering the specs of retailers is going to help people stay in stock."

Meanwhile, the demand for limes in the Northeast at this time of year is relatively strong, particularly with the warm summer temperatures. As for pricing? "We're in a better state this year versus last year," Schwartz says. "We do know the market will increase this month but after that, we don't know where it's going to go."
