UK's Sainsbury's says weak non-food weighs on quarterly sales growth
Sainsbury's, Britain's second largest supermarket group, reported a 3% rise in first-quarter underlying sales, though weather-related weakness in non-food areas partially offset robust demand for groceries. Sainsbury's said it still expected full-year 2024/25 retail underlying operating profit of between 1.01bln and 1.06bln pounds ($1.28-$1.34bln), which would be growth of 5% to 10%.

UK: Asda and Tesco face legal action over E. coli cases
Lawyers acting on behalf of two people who fell ill in an E. coli outbreak in the UK have started legal action against two leading supermarkets. Law firm Fieldfisher said it had issued letters of claim for breach of the Consumer Protection Act over own-brand sandwiches purchased in Tesco and Asda. The E. coli outbreak is thought to be caused by some supermarket sandwiches containing salad leaves.

11 Dutch supermarkets commit to selling 60% plant-based proteins by 2030
Supermarket chain SPAR and app-only grocery retailer Picnic have become the latest companies to commit to the ambitious protein transition goals set out by Dutch animal welfare organization Wakker Dier. They will work to sell 50% plant-based proteins by 2025, with this goal increasing to 60% by 2030. A total of 11 supermarkets operating in the Netherlands have now made the commitment; the others are Albert Heijn, Aldi, Crisp, Dirk, Ekoplaza, Jumbo, Lidl, Plus, and Odin.
