Sandra Sitjar, marketing director of Cultivar:

"Summer forecasts point to a growing demand and limited supply of Brazilian limes"

In late March, the shortage of limes from Brazil caused significant price increases. After a period of relative calm and slight price drops, we have seen a reactivation of the demand in the last two weeks, coinciding with the arrival of summer, which has led to new price increases.

"Currently, the demand is high across Europe for seasonal reasons, but the supply at source is still limited," says Sandra Sitjar, Marketing Director of Cultivar.

"Lime sales tend to increase remarkably with the arrival of summer and this year won't be different. Forecasts for the summer point to a high demand across Europe in the coming weeks as temperatures rise and we head into the tourist season," says Sandra Sitjar.

This will coincide with a limited supply of limes, mainly due to some difficulties in Brazil, according to Cultivar's marketing director, such as sanitary restrictions, which have caused a significant reduction of the amount of exportable limes.

"Moreover, extremely dry weather conditions have also had an impact on both the quantity and quality of the fruit available. We expect there to be a greater amount of small-sized limes and not a lot of large-sized fruit available," she says.

With more than 3,500,000 kilos marketed in 2023 and an 8% increase expected this year, Cultivar is estimated to be the largest importer of limes in Spain, as well as one of the main importers in Europe. "We continue to grow with this product, consolidating our position in the market and always exploring new supply opportunities," says Sandra Sitjar.
