"Visibility in fresh transport: be kept in the loop"

Whether it be about oranges at a grower in South Africa, bobbing on the ocean, or arriving at the terminal in Rotterdam or Antwerp, real-time visibility into a shipment's status is becoming increasingly important for importers.

Shypple is an expeditor with a user-friendly digital platform. This Dutch company has been working with Milestone Fresh, specialists in intercontinental fresh produce transport, since 2021. Together, thanks to proactive service and a platform that makes every step of the supply chain visible, they help fruit and vegetable importers and exporters with insight and digitization. "We offer more than track-and-trace," says founder and CEO Jarell Habets. "We call it visibility, a broader concept than simply where and when a ship will arrive."

Jarell points out that importers can find information about their products' status on their platform, even before a container is loaded. That is because of extensive integration with freight forwarders, terminal operators, and carriers' ERP systems, as well as data from local offices in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Innovative fresh produce sector
According to Jarell, the fresh produce sector is innovative, not traditional and conservative, as often assumed. "It's embracing AI, both in the field and in storage and packing facilities, and companies are building dedicated ERP systems and other tools," he says. Due to low margins and fast turnaround, there is a great need for efficiency, which is accelerating digitization.

Jarell sees a trend in which fruit and vegetable companies require more insight into the supply chain, which is only possible with the best data. "Accurate, real-time information about arriving shipments and an overview of CO2 emissions are crucial." Shypple aggregates shipping company, terminal, and expeditor data on its platform and displays the most relevant updates to customers, eliminating the need for countless calls or emails.

Full-service logistics provider
Shypple can fully handle container logistics for importers and exporters, from sea freight to customs clearance and storage in Europe. With CIF-based purchasing, growers often deal with ocean freight. With FOB-based purchasing, though, Shypple arranges that. Large fresh produce companies usually negotiate with shipping companies for more control, but they can always rely on Shypple to handle and share information through the platform. "Every supply chain player sees and can respond to the same, latest shipping information," says Habets.

Shypple's Black Box
Upon arrival, customs clearance oversight is vital for perishables. "Is the container being scanned? What time is the inspection scheduled for?" are some of the questions Jarell knows are asked. Shypple makes this kind of information available to clients, which is critical in case of delays. A system that collects broad information allows for quick action.

Shypple is also running a trial with a party that uses IoT data loggers to track real-time temperature and humidity in containers.
