“Peru’s citrus has more volume, colour and fruit than last season”

Citrus producers and exporters in Peru are relieved that this year's harvest has returned with good colouring of fruit after two challenging years of El NiƱo. "The projection for this year is that the fruit will have more colour compared to last year," says Andres Orbegozo Tellez, who represents Mapi Fruits, a new consortium of fruit exporters in Peru.

"It looks better than last year. The fruit took a long time to take on the colour T1 and T2. What predominates this year; more than 60% are the small sizes two to four. The large calibres are a bit scarce, therefore the trend is for them to be sold at a higher price," notes Orbegozo Tellez.

Russia and the US are their main markets. "The varieties that we have been working on are Satsumas from the month of March to May with destinations in Russia and the US; we ship to both the east and west coasts. We have started in June with the W Murcott. The destinations are the US, Russia and Central America - Mexico, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala and Costa Rica. This last destination, namely Central America, has positively increased its volume and price," says a delighted Orbegozo Tellez.

"At the end of August we start with the tangerine Malvacea variety, which is a fruit with a little more seed, but the quality is very good, the destinations are the same, and we hope to ship until the end of November to all destinations mentioned," says Orbegozo Tellez.

He works with his business partner Lisette Cruz, who started the new venture to support the Peruvian citrus industry. "We are a consortium of companies with Mapi Fruits EIRL at the head, that is responsible for the trading of the fruit. We have Brokers and Logistics Solutions SAC who is in charge of logistics and brokerage and we work synergistically with other companies in the consortium such as Astral Group, Andeatrade and Mapi Fruits act as the exporters. We have the best team; highly trained and efficient and part of the company's core," concludes Orbegozo Tellez.
