The EU registers the "Green Asparagus of Guadalajara" PGI

The Official Journal of the European Union has announced the approval of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/1887, issued by the Commission on July 2, 2024, confirming the registration of the "Green Asparagus from Guadalajara" Protected Geographical Indication in the official register. This request, which the Asparagus Association of Guadalajara has been promoted since November 2022, represents a significant achievement for the association founded in January 2018 as a non-profit entity.

The green asparagus of Guadalajara are green, tender, healthy, clean shoots grown from Asparagus officinalis L. asparagus, a genetically diploid F1 subspecies. These asparagus, intended for fresh or processed consumption, stand out because they are free of pests and diseases, do not present mechanical or weather-related damage, are clean of soil and washed, and have a curvature that does not exceed 30% in its apical third to the vertical, keeping their tips closed and without branches or flowering.

This PGI's production area covers 44 municipalities in the western part of the province of Guadalajara, in the regions of Sierra, CampiƱa, and Alcarria Alta. This region's weather conditions, which include low temperatures during the production months and the incidence of late frosts, slow down the asparagus' growth favoring a greater concentration of nutrients. They also help it achieve a juicy, not very fibrous flavor, with bittersweet notes and a prolonged aftertaste.

The Green Asparagus of Guadalajara PGI has 25 operators and covers about 550 hectares, producing 2.5 to 3.0 million kilos of green asparagus.
