Harvest of Portuguese kiwiberries to start soon

There are only a few more weeks to go until the harvest of kiwiberries gets going, says Ricardo Machado, export manager of berries for Portuguese berry trader Minikiwi Farm: "The kiwiberry harvest in Portugal starts in about three weeks from now, either in week 30 or 31, and the season should finish in September, between week 38 and 40. As Minikiwi Farm, we have two different kiwiberry varieties, which allows us to extend production by two months. This year, we expect to have a little less volume, due to the rain we had during the time of flowering. Even so, we hope to reach between 100 and 120 tons of production this season."

Machado feels that the kiwiberry is becoming more popular among consumers, but there's still much work to do in regard to awareness of the fruit. "We all know that the kiwiberry is a new fruit, and we still have a long way to go in terms of increasing the popularity and awareness of the fruit. However, we're convinced that this is going to be a good year. Year after year, with many adversities in between, we have seen an increase in consumption among the consumers, which is why we're very hopeful about the potential of minikiwis."

Overall, Machado feels that Minikiwi Farm has done a good job with the kiwiberries: "It wouldn't be interesting if there weren't at least some challenges in between. At the moment, we are a stable company in the market, year after year we've been growing. Not only with kiwiberries, but with other berries as well. We're a family business, with our feet firmly on the ground, with firm ideas and projects. We've adapted to the market every year, we don't skimp on quality and that's why we can say that we're a successful company. But none of this would be possible if we didn't have our partnerships with our customers, who trust us and our product!"

"We encourage everyone that sees kiwiberries on the shelves of the supermarket to give it a try, they won't want anything else! Minikiwi Farm Lda owns the Kiwish brand, which we have been promoting year after year," Machado concludes.
