Black frost impacts agriculture in Limpopo, South Africa

In South Africa's Limpopo province, a severe occurrence of black frost on Sunday morning has led to damage across multiple agricultural sectors, according to TLU SA. The frost event has notably affected potato, tomato, and a variety of other vegetables, with farmers also reporting harm to infrastructure, including water pipes. TLU SA's North Chairman, Henk van de Graaf, highlighted the significant losses incurred by members and the potential for food shortages emanating from the province.

Reports from the Soutpansberg mountain region, Levubu, Marble Hall, Arabie, and Bela-Bela indicated that the black frost was severe. TLU SA is in the process of gathering detailed data on the extent of the damage, including the number of hectares impacted and the financial losses, which will be forwarded to the government for further action. This agricultural setback comes as South Africa is experiencing its peak winter season, characterized by a cold snap that has brought snow to the southern and western parts of the country, freezing conditions nationwide, and high seas and damaging winds along the coastline, as per the weather service's warning.
