Irish potato harvest commences in Nigeria

The commencement of the Irish potato harvest in Nigeria's producing states, including Plateau, the leading state, has led to a decrease in prices due to increased market supply. Plateau state, known for its fertile land and favourable climate, contributes significantly to the national supply, with key producing LGAs such as Bokkos, Mangu, Jos South, Jos North, Bassa, and Jos East.

Recent months saw a spike in prices due to factors like insecurity and farmer-herder conflicts, affecting farming activities and leading to displacement. However, prices have started to decline from a peak of N180,000 per 65kg bag to N45,000, attributed to a bumper harvest. Dealers, including Faruq Rabilu, note the market is currently flooded with produce, suggesting a temporary window for buyers before potential scarcity. The price fluctuation is also linked to hoarding practices amidst economic challenges.
