Dennis Hankins, the United States Ambassador to Haiti, and Vernet Joseph, the Haitian Minister of Agriculture, recently convened to deliberate on agricultural development and economic growth strategies. The discussions led to a consensus on intensifying efforts to align the agricultural objectives of both nations, with a particular focus on resuming the exportation of Francisque mangoes from Haiti to the United States.
Following the suspension of mango imports by the US Department of Agriculture in October 2022 due to security concerns that hindered pre-clearance inspections in Haiti, both parties are now keen on overcoming these challenges. The suspension has had a considerable impact on Haiti's mango industry, affecting everyone from small-scale producers to exporters, with financial losses estimated between 15 and 20 million US dollars annually for the sector.
The mango season in Haiti, which starts in the third week of April and extends until the second week of September, is a critical period for the local economy and the export sector. The collaborative efforts between Haiti and the United States aim to facilitate the safe and efficient resumption of mango exports, addressing both economic and phytosanitary concerns.
