In the current market scenario, onion prices are experiencing an upward trend in India, contrasting with the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan where prices are on the decline. The trade dynamics have seen Afghan onions being imported into India via Pakistan, affecting the local onion market. These imports are primarily entering through Amritsar in Punjab and the Delhi markets, with expectations of them reaching further into the Indian market.
Domestic supplies from regions such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are dwindling, with current stocks being sourced from Nashik, Chakan, and other Maharashtrian markets, alongside Madhya Pradesh. In Delhi, the pricing for Afghan onions ranges from ₹25 to 30 per kilogram. Despite their availability, the preference for domestic onions remains due to their perceived quality advantage.
The Mahatma Phule Market in Chakan is currently relying on stored onions, with a notable absence of new stock. Recent reports highlighted the arrival of 1,000 quintals of old onions, which were sold at wholesale prices between ₹20 to 30 per kilogram. This has been attributed to a significant reduction in overall supply, as stated by Kailas Limbhore and Balasaheb Dhandre of the Khed Agricultural Produce Market Committee.
