Bangladesh resumes onion and potato imports

In an effort to stabilize the local market prices, Bangladesh has reinstated the importation of onions and potatoes, as disclosed by State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu. The temporary suspension of imports during the harvest season of these commodities has been lifted in response to price escalations in the domestic market, with the issuance of import permits now in process. Specifically, onions are set to be imported from India, following ongoing discussions with the relevant authorities.

Current market rates have seen onions and potatoes reaching Tk 130-140 and Tk 60-70 per kg respectively. The announcement came during a press briefing held at the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), attended by Commerce Secretary Md Selim Uddin and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice Chairman Md Anwar Hossain, among others.

Addressing queries regarding discrepancies in export data, the State Minister revealed plans for the EPB to directly collect primary export data from exporters and trade bodies, aiming to reconcile differences and establish a comprehensive database in collaboration with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and Bangladesh Bank. This move seeks to resolve the variances in export definitions among the EPB, NBR, and Bangladesh Bank that have led to inconsistent data reporting.
