“As a direct importer into Taiwan, we ensure that we always have very good quality to supply food service and wholesale markets"

The supply of South Africa grapes into South East Asia was very challenging, and it seems that the citrus supply is also far from easy, but sizes and quality are looking good.

"We have started our citrus imports from South Africa, it has been a challenging season so far. The value of grapefruit from South Africa was unfavourable so we were hesitant at the start and mid-season as prices were low, the supply is therefore late this year," said Andrew Grantham from Heart of Asia Trading, an importer based in Taiwan.

"South Africa has big volumes of 70-88s in the Valencia exports; it's the majority of the crop and this sizing is good for the South East Asian market, and we have weekly allocations for them. Initially Navel lates were very challenging and volumes were low, we have done some 15kg boxes, but it is very challenging to get open-top display boxes and sizes 40-65 are very scarce. Logistics are very slow at the moment, normally we would see a three-week lead time, but this season it as long as six weeks."

Sizing is perfect for the South East Asian market and overall quality is said to be good.

"They are sending more so we can be guaranteed a good result at grading. We will see our first Late Navels at port in a week to a week and half. Late Navel prices have, in general been very high, the highest price we have seen for a while as there is a big demand globally.

"South African blueberries started with very good quality, but they had some weather issues and even though they were covered it has affected the quality. This is a shame as we had consistent orders.

"As a direct importer into Taiwan we ensure that we always have very good quality to supply food service and wholesale markets, we like to have an extended supply, while not clashing with the local season."
