Almeria's tomato production and exports decrease, but their value increases

Tomato production in the province of Almeria has decreased by 36.88% in the last ten seasons, according to data from the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de AndalucĂa analyzed by Hortoinfo. Production has fallen from 1,090.79 million kilos in the 2013/2014 season to 688.47 million kilos in the 2022/2023 season. Despite the drop in production, the value of this vegetable increased by 16.11% in the same period, going from 604.83 million euros to 702.24 million euros.

This increase in value contrasts with the decrease in production and export volume. Tomato exports from Almeria have also decreased by 33.22%, from 530.43 million kilos in the 2013/2014 season to 354.22 million kilos in the 2022/2023 season. Despite this decrease in exports, the proportion of tomatoes exported relative to total production has changed slightly, indicating a change in market dynamics.

These figures reflect the challenges and adaptations of Almeria's agricultural sector in the face of various factors, possibly including changes in cultivation practices, market conditions, and export demands. Production has decreased but the increase in the value of tomatoes produced suggests an adaptation to higher-value crops or an improvement in production efficiency.
