Brazilian animals will soon 'roam the markets' in the U.S. This is through the new brand designed by the Brazilian melon producer Agricola Famosa, represented by Crown International USA LLC, their North American commercial arm.
Rodrigo Lima, president of Crown International based in the U.S., explains why the branding of animals is so important to the company: "Each melon variety showcases a different exotic animal, such as the Golden Lion Tamarin, Pink Dolphin, the Blue Macaw and others, making snack time an educational and engaging experience. By combining conservation awareness with tasty and nutritious fruit, Famosa is not only promoting the protection of Brazil's biodiversity, but also nurturing a love for nature and healthy eating in our youngest generation."
While Brazilian melons are not being sent to the U.S. at the moment with enough local supply available, Lima says they hope the new branding to be launched later this year will prove popular with moms and their kids. "We supply the U.S. market during the off-season for the domestic market. Agricola Famosa starts the shipment mid-September and goes until the end of February with weekly fresh arrival in Philly. We supply five varieties of melons and watermelons, Arara Melon, Yellow Canary Melon, Piel de Sapo Melon, the Mini Watermelon Seedless and the Large Watermelon Seedless. For this new season, we will make some trials with our new Hami Melons as well. We expect to bring to the U.S. market this season a total of 500 containers for the five months with all varieties. During this same period, Agricola Famosa ships an average of 300 containers per week to Europe as the largest melons producer in the world."
He says they hope the new branding will prove popular with moms and their kids. "We believe that this marketing will help to boost sales. First because we will differentiate our melons from the commodity melons that sometimes have the same look outside but with huge differences in flavour and it should bring more loyalty for our new fun brands. Also, we believe that the mothers will be pleased to have some product with excellent taste but could bring more excitement for their kids by trying in some fun way and then create a new demand."
He says it is not so easy to export melons from Brazil to the U.S. "There are a lot of restrictions from Brazil to export melons to the US market. Such as specific areas with allowance by USDA to export to the U.S. has to undergo expensive treatment, which discourage growers to export to the U.S. market, they prefer to go to Europe due to fewer requirements. Nowadays, Agricola Famosa is the only Brazilian company which is exporting melons into the US market," concludes Lima.
