At Hermans Suikermaïs, the harvest of Dutch maize started last week. "We are a bit later than other years and the flooding does cause gaps in production this year. For instance, five to 10 hectares of maize had silted up, which we had to re-sow. That will really affect the early maize," says Con Storm.
"Fortunately, the quality is satisfactory, but stocks are not infinite. Fortunately, due to the nice weather, demand is already good. For the next two weeks, the supply will then be limited. Then, things will get going and we can seriously accelerate. Hopefully the weather will assist," the trader continued.
"I am happy that we were able to wrap up the import season. Due to the weather conditions, the quality of the Spanish corn was not very good at the end. Fortunately, we are no longer suffering from that. Until week 40, we will be in full swing with the Dutch sweetcorn harvest."
Traditionally, sales of Dutch corn have been mainly targeted at domestic retailers and exporters. "Countries around us now also have their own production, but that is not a bad thing as the market is well-balanced at the moment," Con concludes.
