Good expectations for Piura's mango production in 2024

A promising season is expected in the San Lorenzo Valley, Piura, where approximately ten thousand mango producers grow this product on 30,000 hectares. DarĂo Castillo, president of the Junta de Usuarios de San Lorenzo, expects a harvest of 400,000 tons of mango this year. However, he has acknowledged that the favourable climate for flowering does not guarantee maximum yields.

According to data from the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM), the region produced about 150,000 tons of mango in 2023, which is only 30% of what is considered a successful harvest in the Region, as production exceeds 400,000 tons in optimal years. The country's mango production can reach up to 500,000 tons, and San Lorenzo accounts for a substantial part.

Approximately 250,000 tons of San Lorenzo's total production are destined for export, mainly to the Netherlands, Asian markets, and the United States, and the remaining is destined for the local market and processing industry, Castillo stated. This dynamic underlines the importance of Piura's mango nationally and internationally, marking a crucial point for the regional economy and Peru's fruit industry.
