The supply of mushrooms is strong right now and looks similar to this time last year.
As for demand, it is softer right now, as it generally is in August. "The end of July and into August is pretty slow with the summer travel season winding down," says Brenda Barney of Mountain View Mushrooms. "However, the demand will begin to pick up again with school, fall sports, and convention season starting back up."
September is National Mushroom Month
Demand will continue to strengthen throughout the fall, with National Mushroom Month ahead in September, a time when organizations such as The Mushroom Council often highlight ways to promote mushrooms. Then, Thanksgiving to Easter tends to be the strongest demand period for mushrooms in Mountain View Mushrooms' area. (The company is based in Utah and sees strong demand throughout the ski season.)
All of this is leaving prices stable and similar to pricing at this time last year. Looking ahead, pricing may continue to stay that way. "Most customers are struggling to control costs and asking us to hold pricing right now," says Barney. "However, if raw materials and transportation costs increase, we may have to do something after the first of the year."
