Prognosfruit 2024 forecasts decline in apple production

European apple output faces challenges

Prognosfruit 2024 revealed a forecasted decline in European apple production, with most countries expecting reduced outputs due to spring frosts. The World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) anticipates a total yield of 10.21 million tonnes across Europe, marking an 11.3 percent decrease from the previous year. This downturn is attributed to adverse flowering conditions affecting key producers including Germany, Poland—the continent's largest apple producer—Benelux, and France. However, an expansion is expected in Spain, while Italy is projected to experience a minor decline in production.

VOG CEO Walter Pardatscher emphasized the importance of strategic adaptation to remain competitive amidst market transformations, geopolitical uncertainties, and climate change. Crop protection measures and varietal innovation are highlighted as critical responses to these challenges. VOG Sales Manager Klaus Hölzl noted the slight decrease in the 24-25 crop estimates but maintained a positive outlook, underscoring the consortium's readiness to meet market demands with a diverse varietal assortment and strong brand strategies aimed at boosting apple and fruit consumption.

The annual Prognosfruit conference also hosted discussions on marketing strategies for the fruit and vegetable sector, sharing insights on consumer engagement and demand management. VOG Marketing Manager Hannes Tauber pointed out the importance of offering a well-structured product range to satisfy market needs throughout the year, leveraging strong branding and innovative campaigns to promote apple consumption.
