The Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) has played a key role in enhancing the avocado production sector in Tanzania. According to Geoffrey Kirenga, CEO of SAGCOT, the sector has experienced growth in productivity, value addition, and exportation due to collaborations with numerous local and international stakeholders. This was highlighted during the 31st Farmers' Expo at the avocado pavilion.
Kirenga emphasized the increasing cooperation among stakeholders to promote avocado cultivation in Tanzania, noting the participation of over 60 SAGCOT stakeholders in the expo. These stakeholders, including 18 agro companies, showcased advancements in the avocado value addition chain, from seed production to avocado oil processing. SAGCOT's initiatives have also supported small-scale farmers in expanding production and accessing markets, alongside imparting agronomic practices for professional avocado cultivation.
The expansion of avocado production is creating economic opportunities for farmers, not only in cultivation but also in value addition. With a current export volume of 25,000 tonnes, SAGCOT aims to increase this to between 200,000 and 250,000 tonnes within the next decade. The global demand for avocados is rising, with Tanzanian exports reaching markets in Europe, India, and plans to expand into China and South Africa.
