Elhadary, export manager of Alsolimania:

"We're expecting some tough competition from China"

The Egyptian lemon season starts soon, in September. Growers and exporters agree that volumes have increased significantly, as indicated by Fatimah Elzhraa Tarek Elhadary, export sales executive at Alsolimania.

The exporter says, "A lot of farmers have grown lemons this year, and the increase in acreage is impressive. I'm expecting volumes to be 25% higher than last season, and an early start to the campaign. Prices will be slightly up on last season's launch, at around 5% to USD 13.5-15."

Elhadary says she's worried about competition in the Far East, especially given the difficulty of shipping to this market. She explains, "Every season brings its share of challenges, such as climate change, quality, or the sizes that impacted last season. This year, it's the logistical blockage caused by the war that's worrying us, which increases the cost of our lemons and the transit time considerably."

"We're expecting tough competition from China, which will have quality lemons close to this market. Maybe we'll have to rely on other markets and reduce our business forecast with the Far East, and target the European market more," she concludes.
