Record prices announced for 2024/25 citrus crop

Future of Belize's citrus industry discussed

On August 12, 2024, a meeting convened by the Ministry of Agriculture with Citrus Products of Belize Limited (CPBL) and other key stakeholders took place, focusing on collaborative efforts to rejuvenate and fortify Belize's citrus sector. The dialogue underscored the necessity of ongoing support for the citrus industry to ensure its sustainability and expansion.

Post-discussion, attendees visited CPBL's nursery facility, capable of producing 130,000 plants, highlighting its integral role in the industry's revival through the planting of 177 acres of oranges.

In preparation for the 2024-2025 processing season, CPBL has communicated with leading citrus growers' associations, announcing anticipated record prices for boxes of orange and grapefruit at $22 each. The price per pound solid will be set at $5.50 for grapefruit and $3.86 for oranges.

Similar to the sugar industry, citrus growers will receive payments in three instalments, with an initial advance payment of 65% of the total price upon delivery. The subsequent payments will be 85% of the total price by the end of March for grapefruit and June for oranges, with the balance by September. This year's prices, exceeding last season's $18 per box, address challenges faced by the industry, including labour and disease issues.
