A trial run for a new freight train service connecting Yunnan, China, with Selangor, Malaysia, commenced today, as reported by the Straits Times. Originating from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, the route traverses Thailand and Laos, entering Malaysia through Padang Besar in Perlis, and concluding in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi highlighted that this rail link, operational in around 10 days, offers a swifter alternative to the conventional sea routes, which typically extend beyond 20 days for transporting goods between the two regions.
As part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative, this project is designed to facilitate access to new markets and enhance regional connectivity. Zahid emphasized the potential for expanded cooperation in rail transport and future high-speed rail ventures between China and Malaysia. China State Railway Group Corp (China Railway) has been designated as the operator, presenting an opportunity for Malaysia's Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) to foster ties with China Railway. KTM has been operating the Asean Express, a weekly cargo service linking Selangor with Chongqing, China, via Thailand and Laos, since June 2024.
