Spanish authorities dismantle criminal network that smuggled cocaine in pineapple boxes

In a joint operation carried out by Spain's National Police and Portugal's Judicial, a criminal organization specializing in smuggling cocaine into Spain in boxes of pineapples has been dismantled. Three people involved in the scheme were arrested in the operation.

The investigation began in May after the arrival of a container from Costa Rica to the Portuguese port of Setúbal was detected. The container, which transported fruit imported by a company based in Barcelona, raised suspicions and Spanish and Portuguese authorities set up a surveillance operation to follow the container from its arrival at the port to its final destination in Barcelona's Zona Franca.

At the unloading point, police agents observed two individuals carrying out counter-surveillance. When they inspected the merchandise, authorities discovered 589 rectangular packages of cocaine with a total weight of 211 kilos, hidden in a false floor of the boxes of pineapples in several pallets. The two subjects were immediately arrested.

The operation continued until a third member of the network, who was allegedly the final recipient of the drug, was identified and arrested.
